SAM Registration (System for Award Management)
Free registration in SAM.gov that any entity must complete before it can be awarded a US federal contract or receive federal funds.
What is SAM Registration?
SAM.gov (the System for Award Management) is the US federal government's official registration system for organizations that want to do business with federal agencies. An active SAM registration is a prerequisite for award: under the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR 4.1102), a prospective contractor must be registered in SAM before a federal contract is awarded, with limited exceptions. SAM consolidated several legacy systems, including the Central Contractor Registration (CCR), the Online Representations and Certifications Application (ORCA), and the Excluded Parties List System (EPLS).
Registration is free directly at SAM.gov — the government charges no fee, and third-party services that offer to register a company are optional intermediaries, not official. Completing a registration requires the entity's legal business name and physical address (used to validate and assign the Unique Entity ID), a CAGE code (assigned automatically during registration for domestic entities), banking details for electronic payment, NAICS codes describing the entity's lines of business, and the federal representations and certifications. Registrations must be renewed at least every 12 months to remain active.
For vendors, SAM registration is the gateway step before any other federal business-development activity. A lapsed or incomplete registration is a common, avoidable reason for being passed over at award. Maintaining accurate NAICS codes and size representations in SAM also drives whether an entity appears in small-business and set-aside searches that contracting officers use for market research.
Example
A software firm completes its SAM.gov registration, receives a Unique Entity ID and CAGE code, and selects NAICS 541512 so contracting officers can find it when researching the custom-software market.
